Delhi Woman’s Scary Auto Ride: “Almost Kidnapped”, Warns Others

{A woman in Delhi had a very scary morning when her ride in an auto-rickshaw took a frightening turn. Her story, shared on Reddit, has quickly spread, making many people worried about safety when using taxi apps and autos.

Her Experience

She normally books autos via apps for her office commute but had to opt for Ola when her regular app showed no availability. Moments into the journey, the driver pulled over, saying his phone had stopped showing directions. She later found out he had secretly ended the trip on the app during this stop, meaning it was no longer tracking them.

Soon after, the driver turned onto a road that felt completely wrong, triggering alarm bells in her mind. Signs indicated they were moving opposite to her office, toward a distant area almost two hours away, far longer than her normal 30-45-minute commute.

When she told him to turn around, he kept repeating that Google Maps showed this route and drove fast on busy roads, leaving her trapped.

Her quick message to her partner prompted him to call instantly, demanding the driver take her back. Following heated arguments and her contemplating leaping from the moving auto, the driver finally turned back near her area, refused payment, and fled. They felt certain he intended to abduct her, as he left without taking any money.

Shaken by the event, she found Ola’s safety response lacking, with no real complaint process besides telling her to call authorities.

This wasn’t an isolated case—recent police reports in Delhi and nearby areas have highlighted similar incidents with auto drivers, including alleged kidnapping attempts. Another incident involved a teenage girl in Thane who managed to escape by jumping from a running auto, aided by a compass.

Public Reaction on Reddit

Her Reddit account received dozens of shocked responses, with people commenting things like, “Horrifying!” and “That’s terrifying”. Several advised her to file a police complaint and escalate the matter to Ola through social channels.

Others offered advice and recounted similar incidents:

• Keep your house keys handy as an emergency defense.
• Speak loudly about your route or keep navigation on speaker so the driver feels monitored.
• Opt for the metro when traveling solo whenever possible.
• Many agreed Ola’s safety shortcomings make it unreliable.

Key Travel Safety Advice from Her Experience

Think Twice Before Booking Alone: Solo bookings pose risks since drivers aren’t always trustworthy.
Verify Vehicle Details Before Boarding: Double-check the auto number to prevent impersonation.
Only Board After OTP Verification: Make sure the OTP is confirmed and ride tracking is active first.
Keep App Open: Stay on the app to ensure the ride remains active.
Inform a Trusted Contact of Your Whereabouts: Always share your live route with someone you trust.
Choose an Exit-Friendly Seat: Always keep yourself near an accessible side of the auto.
Stick to Areas You Recognize: Avoid unknown routes where you can’t judge if the driver diverts.
Check Google Maps: Follow along on maps to spot detours.
Stay Alert for Nearby Officers: Be conscious of where help is nearby.
Do Not Use Ola Due to Safety Gaps: Her strongest advice was to avoid Ola given the company’s lack of safeguards.

This alarming incident underscores the urgent Drone delivery need for ride-hailing platforms to implement stricter driver checks, real-time monitoring, and proper passenger support systems during emergencies.
